Siri supports a wide range of user commands, including performing phone actions, checking basic information, scheduling events and reminders, handling device settings, searching the Internet, navigating areas, finding information on entertainment, and is able to engage with iOS-integrated apps. With the release of iOS 10 in 2016, Apple opened up limited third-party access to Siri, including third-party messaging apps, as well as payments, ride-sharing, and Internet calling apps. With the release of iOS 11, Apple updated Siri's voice and added support for follow-up questions, language translation, and additional third-party actions.
Siri's original release on iPhone 4S in 2011 received mixed reviews. It received praise for its voice recognition and contextual knowledge of user information, including calendar appointments, but was criticized for requiring stiff user commands and having a lack of flexibility. It was also criticized for lacking information on certain nearby places, and for its inability to understand certain English accents. In 2016 and 2017, a number of media reports said that Siri lacked innovation, particularly against new competing voice assistants. The reports concerned Siri's limited set of features, "bad" voice recognition, and undeveloped service integrations as causing trouble for Apple in the field of artificial intelligence and cloud-based services; the basis for the complaints reportedly due to stifled development, as caused by Apple's prioritization of user privacy and executive power struggles within the company.[3] Its launch was also overshadowed by the death of Steve Jobs, which occurred one day after the launch.

Siri's speech recognition engine was provided by Nuance Communications, a speech technology company.[7] Neither Apple nor Nuance acknowledged this for years,[8][9] until Nuance CEO Paul Ricci confirmed it at a 2011 technology conference.[7] The speech recognition system uses sophisticated machine learning techniques, including convolutional neural networks and long short-term memory.[10]
The original American voice of Siri was recorded in July 2005 by Susan Bennett, who was unaware it would eventually be used for the voice assistant.[15][16] A report from The Verge in September 2013 about voice actors, their work, and machine learning developments, hinted that Allison Dufty was the voice behind Siri,[17][18] but this was disproven when Dufty wrote on her website that she was "absolutely, positively not the voice of Siri."[16] Citing growing pressure, Bennett revealed her role as Siri in October, and her claim was confirmed by Ed Primeau, an American audio forensics expert.[16] Apple has never acknowledged it.[16]
For iOS 11, Apple auditioned hundreds of candidates to find new female voices, then recorded several hours of speech, including different personalities and expressions, to build a new text-to-speech voice based on deep learning technology.[22] In February 2022, Apple added Quinn, its first gender-neutral voice as a fifth user option, to the iOS 15.4 developer release.[23]
Siri released as a stand-alone application for the iOS operating system in February 2010, and at the time, the developers were also intending to release Siri for Android and BlackBerry devices.[24] Two months later, Apple acquired Siri.[25][26][27] On October 4, 2011, Apple introduced the iPhone 4S with a beta version of Siri.[28][29] After the announcement, Apple removed the existing standalone Siri app from App Store.[30] TechCrunch wrote that, though the Siri app supports iPhone 4, its removal from App Store might also have had a financial aspect for the company, in providing an incentive for customers to upgrade devices.[30] Third-party developer Steven Troughton-Smith, however, managed to port Siri to iPhone 4, though without being able to communicate with Apple's servers.[31] A few days later, Troughton-Smith, working with an anonymous person nicknamed "Chpwn", managed to fully hack Siri, enabling its full functionalities on iPhone 4 and iPod Touch devices.[32] Additionally, developers were also able to successfully create and distribute legal ports of Siri to any device capable of running iOS 5, though a proxy server was required for Apple server interaction.[33]
In August 2019, Apple apologized, halted the Siri grading program, and said that it plans to resume "later this fall when software updates are released to [its] users".[78] iOS 13.2, released in October 2019, introduced the ability to opt out of the grading program and to delete all the voice recordings that Apple has stored on its servers.[79]
It has been a bumpy start for iPhone 14 owners. Yesterday, Apple released iOS 16.0.1 specifically to address data migration, authorization and photo issues with the range. Today, the company has confirmed additional problems with iMessage and FaceTime.
Apple has previewed new child safety features that will be coming to its platforms with software updates at an unspecified later date. The company said the features will be available in the U.S. only at launch and will be expanded to other regions over time, including the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
The Apple Developer Program License Agreement and the App Store Review Guidelines have been updated to support new features in upcoming OS releases, better protect users, and help your apps go through the review process as smoothly as possible.
The App Store Connect API now offers greater flexibility to automate and customize workflows for your app. With these new capabilities, you can create and submit in-app events, custom product pages, and product page optimization tests. This release also includes support for the updated App Store submission experience, which lets you submit multiple items, submit without a new app version, and retrieve submission statuses.
The App Store is a safe and trusted place for customers to discover and download apps, and a great opportunity for developers. The following updates to the App Store Review Guidelines support new features in upcoming OS releases, better protect customers, and help your apps go through the review process as smoothly as possible.
SharePlay has been disabled for use in the developer beta 6 versions of iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and tvOS 15, and will be disabled in the upcoming beta 6 release of macOS Monterey. SharePlay will also be disabled for use in their initial releases this fall. SharePlay will be enabled for use again in future developer beta releases and will launch to the public in software updates later this fall.
If your team plans to submit an update to your app for the initial release of these platforms, please remove the GroupActivities entitlement. We will provide guidance when SharePlay is re-enabled in a future developer beta, at which point we encourage you to include the GroupActivities entitlement in your code.
Apple unveiled iOS 16 at WWDC 2022 back in June - the latest operating system for iPhone and the successor to iOS 15, but the release date of September 12 was confirmed at Apple's 'Far Out' event on September 7.
Prior to iOS 16.2, Apple released iOS 16.1.2, this update included improved crash detection, carrier upgrades and security updates. It came out on November 30. iOS 16.1.1 included bug fixes and security updates. About a month after iOS 16.0 arrived, iOS 16.1 became available to download on October 24. iOS 16.1 includes several new features and fixes.
What's particularly interesting about this is that Apple has never confirmed who the original voice actors for Siri are. Bennett, however, is confident that she's the original Siri, and after her reveal in 2013, CNN reached out to an audio-forensics expert who determined with "100%" certainty that Bennett's voice and Siri's voice are the same. Apple, for its part, has remained quiet about the history of Siri's voice, and according to Briggs was even "rather dismissive" when he reached out to the company to offer his help in promoting Siri.
Apple's updated its website with new information about iOS 15's batch of security patches. The company now says the software patched up an issue that could have exposed a user's private Apple ID information and in-app search history. It also says iOS 15 patched up an issue that allowed apps to override Privacy preferences.
We would not expect the Apple Glass release date to be anytime soon. That's because an Apple AR/VR headset is expected first, which is now tipped to be unveiled in March ahead of release later on 2023.
Meanwhile analyst Jeff Pu originally claimed that the Apple Glasses could launch in late 2024, alongside a second generation version of the Apple VR/AR headset; however, the analyst has since pushed back his release date estimate to 2026. 2ff7e9595c
